Consumers need to be aware of a high-tech scam called phishing that uses spam or pop-up messages online to trick you into disclosing credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, or other sensitive information.
Phishers send messages that claim to be from a business or organization familiar to you. The message usually says to “update” or “validate” account information and may threaten a consequence for not responding. It directs you to a Web site that looks just like a legitimate organization’s site, but it isn’t. The purpose of the bogus site is to trick you into divulging personal information, so the operators can steal your identity and run up bills or commit crimes in your name.
If you get an email request for personal information which appears to be from Omaha Federal Credit Union do not reply to this e-mail. Omaha Federal will never send e-mails asking for confidential information such as your password, Social Secuity number or account number.
How to Avoid Being a Phishing Victim
- If you get an e-mail or pop-up message that asks for personal or financial information, do not reply or access the link.
- Don’t e-mail personal or financial information.
- Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to see if there are any unauthorized charges.
- Use anti-virus software and keep it up to date.
- Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files from e-mails you receive, regardless of who sent them.
- Report suspicious activity to Omaha Federal immediately at 402-399-9001 or 1-800-660-7350. If you get spam that is phishing for information, forward it to stevejohnson@omahafcu.org.
