170 Memorial Day Baskets For Vets Delivered May 25, 2022

Greetings!

We wanted to formally take time to THANK YOU for your partnership on our recently completed community service campaign, “Memorial Day Baskets for Veterans!” We are so thrilled that you chose to join us for this unique opportunity to serve those who have sacrificed and given so much to our country, including the freedom and liberties that we enjoy today!

From the humble start of this grassroots campaign in 2021, we were committed to serving Veterans in communities where we, as a credit union, have been so blessed to serve those who live and work there. This was the 2nd year for “Memorial Day Baskets for Veterans,” and we went from delivering baskets to 44 Vets last year to 170 Vets this year! How did we grow so much in just one year? We decided to spread our wings and adopt not only the three retirement communities in Blair/Washington County (Carter Place, Crowell Memorial Home and Good Shepherd) and one in Fort Calhoun/Washington County (Autumn Pointe), but we also added Crown Pointe in Omaha/Douglas County and the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue/Sarpy County. This year was over-the-top successful, too! We have YOU to thank for that! THANK YOU for your monetary and in-kind donations, as well as your time and talents. We couldn’t have done it without YOU!

Also, we want to give a special shout out to Ed Lautrup, Washington County’s Veterans Service Officer, for partnering with us again this year to help disseminate information to businesses and to help guide numerous Veterans organizations across the county toward a common goal. Because of Ed’s enthusiastic involvement, as well as help from personnel from the six nursing homes/retirement communities, we were able to provide a total of 170 “stuffed” patriotic goodie bags for Veterans with all sorts of useful and fun items including socks, playing cards, games, books, puzzles, word searches, snacks, gum, candy, pens, notepads, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, Washington County Chamber Bucks (Washington County only), patriotic lapel pins, combs, brushes, magazines, mints, hats, lanyards, stress balls, magnetic clips, pinwheels, chapstick, bookmark magnifiers, water bottles and personalized notes of thanks, the latter of which were penned by Fort Calhoun’s Cub Scouts Pack 114 and Boy Scouts Troop 114!

Numerous volunteers and OFCU employees went above and beyond to raise funds, organize donations, purchase products, make personal Vet nametags, create candy goodie bags, cut ribbon, and then stuff and transport the baskets to transfer vehicles. On Wednesday, May 25, we cheerfully delivered the personalized baskets to all six senior living communities! We had been working with the homes’ activities directors for more than two months, and it was a great joy when we were able to meet them and present the Veterans baskets just in time for Memorial Day.

THANK YOU doesn’t seem like enough gratitude for what you’ve helped us accomplish! THANK YOU for your passion, dedication and willingness to walk this patriotic give-back journey with us — a journey that turned out to be SO MUCH MORE than we originally envisioned! By living our cooperative principles, and providing service to our community, we were able to create an experience for these 170 Vets that they will not soon forget!

THANK YOU for reaching out to these Veterans and helping to put BIG smiles on their faces! It makes them feel so much more connected and appreciated by those around them. And we think that is the feeling for all of us as well.

Thankful for YOU,

Cheryl Mathis, President
